Fences

Do you have a wood fence, or are you planning to have one installed? Wood fences are a popular choice for homeowners who wish to add security and privacy to their yard in a way that compliments the surrounding natural environment. However, compared to metal or vinyl, wood requires more upkeep. That's because it's an organic material that's susceptible to all kinds of weather - rain, snow, sun, and even a lack of moisture.

Is your wood fence looking old and worn? Make it look like new again and give it the protection it needs to last for many years to come. At Horner, we specialize in all types of interior and exterior painting and staining services for your home, deck, fence, railings, pergola, and more. Give us a call today and we'll be happy to discuss your project and get started on your free quote.

Patio Covers

Wood patio covers, also known as pergolas, are a popular option for providing some refuge from the mid-day Colorado sun. Unfortunately, those intense UV rays can also take a toll on the wood and make it deteriorate quickly if it's not properly maintained. The application of paint or stain is necessary to seal the wood and provide UV protection.

If your patio cover is looking a little worse-for-wear, or, if you're considering installing new pergola, give Horner a call. We can help you decide on the right color, explain our 5-year guarantee, and even provide you with a free price quote.

Railings

How long has it been since your deck was installed? Even if you've repainted or stained the main surface of your deck, at some point you'll also need to do the railing. Don't let a worn and faded railing affect the beauty and integrity of your deck - keep it protected and looking great with staining and painting services from Horner Painting of Fort Collins.

We're a locally-owned and operated painting company that is dedicated to providing a higher level of service to our friends and neighbors in and around the Fort Collins area. If your deck, railing, pergola, gazebo, or house could use a fresh coat of paint or stain, we hope you'll give us a call and experience the Horner difference!

Protecting Your Wood Deck

Decks are a popular addition for homeowners looking to add value and living space to their homes. However, if it is made of wood, a deck will require ongoing maintenance. Bare wood or wood that hasn’t been treated in quite some time is subject to mold, warping, and cracking. To prevent this from happening, people often paint, stain, and/or seal their deck.

Is it Better to Paint or Stain a Deck?

Painting or staining will help protect your wood deck, but there are definite pros and cons of each.

Paint

PROS

  • More color options to choose from
  • Hides more flaws in the wood

CONS

  • Can trap moisture already in the wood
    causing mold and rot
  • Covers up the natural wood grain

Stain

PROS

  • Highlights woods natural appearance
  • Provides good protection from moisture

CONS

  • Limited colors to choose from
  • Doesn't adhere to some types of wood
  • Not as durable as paint unless a
    sealant is also applied

Deck Sealing

If you don’t want to cover up the natural beauty of your wood deck but want to make sure it’s protected from the elements, applying a clear sealant is the way to go. Sealants can also be applied as an added layer of protection after staining. There are several variables that go into deciding whether or not you need to add a sealant to your deck, and how often it will need to be reapplied. For more information, or help with deciding whether or not your deck would benefit from a sealant, contact our team.

Quick Deck & Fence Tips

Increase the longevity of your stain or paint job by following these simple tips!

Don’t Stain a Brand New Deck

Wood has moisture in it, so you should always be sure to let a new deck “dry out” for at least 30 days before painting or staining.

Clean It Regularly

When dirt and debris build up on your deck, it can promote decay or act as an abrasive on a painted or stained deck.

Air It Out

Moisture can ruin paint and stain. Keep your deck dry by removing leaves and moving furniture to ensure wet areas are able to dry.

Inspect It

At least twice a year, take a good look at your deck and inspect it for damage. Even minor problems can compromise the integrity of your paint or stain and cause it to deteriorate quicker.
